Since its redesign in 2017 (model year), the Mazda CX-5 has taken the compact SUV segment by storm. Focusing on more premium upgrades and a human-centric design, this vehicle has become something special for Mazda. Although similar in appearance, the 2020 Mazda CX-5 is even better and displays Mazda’s commitment to their drivers and customers. The Mazda CX-5 is the best-selling Mazda in America, and the following will show you why you should consider this Crossover Sport Utility when you are shopping for your next vehicle.
There are 5 trim levels available on the 2020 Mazda CX-5: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature. The Grand Touring Reserve (GT-R) and Signature are low volume models that include unique features. I will include some information on these, but the majority of the information shared will focus on the first three trim levels because of their higher sales totals and availability. I have also linked videos from my YouTube channel, JSS Tube, to accompany the Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trim levels. Please feel free to watch the videos to visually cover the different equipment, features, and equipment.
Beginning of Mazda CX-5
The Mazda CX-5 came to existence at a pivotal time for Mazda as the outgoing Mazda Tribute was being discontinued as part of their partnership with Ford Motor Company dissolved. Ford began selling portions of their ownership in Mazda in 2008, and eventually sold it all in 2015. The Mazda Tribute was nothing more than a rebadged Ford Escape without much of the Hiroshima-based company’s influence at all. The termination of this partnership allowed Mazda to turn over a complete new leaf as well as introduce new design theory and technology that is still used today.
The 2012 release of the all-new model year 2013 Mazda CX-5 introduced kodo “soul of motion” design. This design gives the flowing appearance of motion on the sheet metal when the car is sitting still. One way this is possible is by the handcrafted design from full-size clay models. The Mazda CX-5 also was the first vehicle to feature the new SkyActiv technology that included a strong, lightweight frame, as well as, new Mazda-made powertrain. Mazda made a commitment then that the Mazda CX-5 was going to be an important part of its lineup for years to come.
Fast forward to 2020 and the Mazda CX-5 has continued to improve in kodo design and SkyActiv overall performance. The design and technology have been more influential in Mazda’s Human-centric commitment. The design continues to be updated with materials and placements to make the Mazda CX-5 quieter through better noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) values, even better than the previous 2019 Mazda CX-5. The SkyActiv technology has proven to offer great fuel economy through lightweight components and better combustion and shifting efficiency. Mazda is still working to make their best vehicle even better.
Mazda CX-5 Sport
The Mazda CX-5 Sport is the entry or starting level that includes the SkyActiv G inline 4-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque with the SkyActiv Drive 6 speed automatic transmission. This front wheel drive powertrain provides 28 MPG combined for an impressive and fuel-saving overall drive and experience. All vehicles have a transmission Sport mode that changing the electronic control to longer, high-rev shift points and more immediate torque.
The Sport was upgraded in 2019 to include the i-Activsense safety suite that includes Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Smart City Brake Support (automatic emergency braking) with Advanced Pedestrian Detection, Smart Brake Support, Lane Departure Alert, Lane Keep Assist, and Automatic High Beam Assist. It also includes Blind-spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic and LED headlights. All of these were previously an add-on option for the 2017 & 2018 model years.

This vehicle also includes 2 USB ports inside the center console. The key fob is a new design like the Mazda3 released in early 2019. The instrument cluster has a almost 3” LCD on the right that displays optional fuel and distance information and safety information. The Driver’s seat is a 6-way manual including forward, back, up, down, recline up, and recline down. Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve
The Mazda CX-5 GT-R is similar exterior features of the Grand Touring. The interior adds the GT Premium package as standard, but adds an 8-inch full-color touchscreen (new for 2020) like the one seem in the Mazda CX-9. The big differences to the the next two trim levels is that the SkyActiv G 2.5 Turbo engine is standard adding 227 HP (87 Octane) or 250 HP (93 Octane). New for 2020 this engine has 320 lb-ft or torque with any octane gas. Carbuzz.com calls this engine at “torque monster” (https://carbuzz.com/news/2020-mazda-cx-5-is-a-torque-monster). The other addition to this vehicle is the standard i-Activ All Wheel Drive. This is predictive all wheel drive that based on inputs from the terrain and driving behavior predicts when you need rear wheel traction and engages a 50-50 torque split before it’s needed. All Wheel Drive is available on all the previous trim levels for an additional $400.
The Grand Touring Reserve is available in all exterior colors and interior options just like the Grand Touring.
Mazda CX-5 Signature
The Mazda CX-5 Signature is equipped with the same powertrain as the GT-R it adds a frameless auto-dimming rear mirror, front and rear sonar, Mazda Navigation system, a real Napa Leather offered only in Caturra Brown, genuine layered wood trim, ambient cabin lighting, Dark Silver finish 19-inch wheels, leather wrapped steering wheel with unique stitching, Signature badge, Black cloth headliner, and 360 degree camera and monitor.
This is truly an amazing vehicle and with the upgraded 8 inch screen the 360 camera is even more appreciated. The Signature model was available in 2019 with the SkyActiv D Diesel engine, however that powertrain has not been produced for 2020 yet.
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is a fantastic compact SUV with more enhanced driving enjoyment and a more quiet cabin. The available amenities are typically not seen in the mainline segment and Mazda has been actively adding more premium features to make the Mazda CX-5 a frontrunner in its segment. With such a vast array of options across the 5 trim levels there is a specific Mazda CX-5 for everyone. Which is your favorite? Which would you choose?
